Meet our summer intern!

Meet Julie, one of our summer interns this year. Julie is a master degree student of Aquaculture from Kristiansund.

Tell us a little about yourself:

My name is Julie, I’m 23 and from Kristiansund. I have been working for Kontali since June, the rest of the year I am studying Aquaculture at the Norwegian University of Life Science (NMBU). Beside studying I have also pratical experience with the aquaculture industry through my part time job working for Lerøy and involvement in some projects with Nofima (the Norwegian Institute of Food, Fisheries and Aquaculture Research).

Why did you apply for a summer job at Kontali?

My interest for Kontali began back in 2014 when I was invited to join the Productivity Conference which is held each year by Kontali. I was intrigued and kept an eye on Kontali, following them on LinkedIn. What really appealed to me is how an internationally renowned company is located in Kristiansund.

What tasks have you been assigned while working for Kontali?

I have been part of many different projects during my time at Kontali. Mostly I have been working on the EUMOFA project. Through this I have learned a lot about aquaculture in Thailand and Peru, recirculating aquaculture systems (RAS), freshwater aquaculture, and I also had a chance to speak to experts in other European countries.

What challenges did you face during your internship?

I think my greatest challenges was related to logistics of working during the summer. For several projects I needed to collect data and interview several  people in other countries who were on summer vacation. I also had to conduct interviews in English, which was both challenging but also very fun.

Would you recommend Kontali as a place for summer internships?

I would recommend Kontali to those who want to gain insight into the more theoretical parts of the fisheries and aquaculture industry. Many summer jobs relating to my area of study are practical, but at Kontali you work more academically and see the bigger picture. If you are willing to grab opportunities and use the resources available you will gain unique and valuable insights into all parts of the seafood supply chain.

What are your plans as your summer internship comes to an end?

When my internship is finished I will begin working on my master thesis, which will consist of field research and a partnership with Nofima. If travel restrictions lift I will travel to the Netherlands for an exchange semester in the spring.
